Have you ever seen a Butter Cow? Well that’s just one of the many things you’ll encounter if you check out the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio. This fair begins every year in early August and has been going strong for over 150 years. The butter cow is actually a unique sculpture of a Cow made entirely out of butter. Of course this tasty piece of art would melt in the August heat so it and other butter sculptures are kept indoors and well-air conditioned.

There are many other interesting exhibits which exemplify the agriculturally based economy of Ohio. From time to time visitors may find themselves in line to try the act of milking a real cow or heading to the vegetable exhibit to see this year’s Giant Pumpkin or best Indian corn. There will also be a new exhibit this 2006 called the ‘The Gallery of Stains.’ It will encourage visitors to make to messiest of stains on a wall and try to get them out with a name brand detergent.

The midway will offer up lots of carnival food including funnel cakes, elephants ears and a Midwest favorite, Roast Corn on the Cob, including as much butter and salt as you could want. Just don’t eat too much before you get on one of several rides.

For some family fun you can head over to the old time era pavilion. Here you’ll find people living and dressing in the style of over a hundred years ago. Sample some homemade Sassafras tea, learn how to whittle or meet Smokey the Bear and learn that only you can prevent forest fires.

There is also a small stocked catfish pond where fair visitors can pay extra to rent a pole and attempt to catch some fish to take home for dinner. This is a great activity for the kids.

Since the fair is in the state’s capitol there is usually plenty of accommodation available in the form of a hotel room in town. There tends to be a lot of traffic in town so be careful or you may want to spend some time at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) exhibit this year.

The State Fair of Louisiana will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this late October of 2006. Every year visitors from all around Louisiana drop in for some Cajun Concession food and a chance to visit the State Fair Zoo. This may be one of the few state fairs that operates a free daily zoo, with Elephants, Tigers and Giraffes.

For those of you more interested in the food you can grab just about anything on a stick at the Concession, Shrimp-on-a-stick, and Pork butt-on-a-stick and even Pizza-on-a-stick. Don’t forget about the delicious Cajun food available. Stands cook up Crawfish Etoufee, Red Beans and Rice with Sausage and even Gator Wings.

Speaking of Gators this wouldn’t be a Louisiana State Fair without the Reptile Shows and Alligator Exhibits that have the run of the fair. Though if you are a bit squeamish you can always stick to the Carnival Midway and have fun on one of the many, many rides available.

If the heat gets to be too much for you, head indoors and check out the seller’s exhibits. All manner and variety of items are for sale or exhibited in a marketplace environment. You are guaranteed to find beef sticks and cheese for sale next to aromatherapy candles and pewter figurines.

For the kids there is a coloring contest held regularly, along with animal rides and face painting and even the occasional picture on a pony. Of course most of the stuff at the fair is going to be fun for the kids.

The Hirsch Coliseum will have some form of entertainment during every evening of the state fair. Each year the State Fair Queen’s Pageant is held in there to decide who will be the Queen of that year’s fair. Also the Mexican Rodeo is held there on State Fair Hispanic Heritage Day. Most events held in the Coliseum cost extra, but there are plenty of other free stage attractions throughout the fair.

The Washington County Fair takes place every year around August 16-20 in the tiny state of Rhode Island. One of the biggest draws to this fair is its concerts showcasing many of today’s Country Music stars. Plus for the visitors there’s no extra charge, the cost of the concerts are included in the ticket price. Visitors also get to see the tractor and truck pulls free and they can enjoy a nighttime fireworks display courtesy of the fair organizers.

If you are a hobbyist you’ll be interested in the competitive hobbies exhibits. Yes, collectables enthusiasts bring in all the stuff they’ve accumulated over the years and arrange it for a unique and interesting display in their booth. There are divisions in collectable cars, ships, planes and even spaceships. Visitors can swing by their favorite booth and talk shop with a fellow hobbyist for the day.

Another competitive exhibit at the fair is the baking contest. This is unique because contestants are required to bake something from a required recipe each year. It could be Pineapple Bread or Cinnamon Buns, but whoever bakes the best and closest to the recipe is the winner.

Visitors that want to ‘ooh’ and ‘aw’ over cute baby animals should check out the Jr. Animals division of the Junior Dairy Show. You can see heifer calves from the Holstein, Guernsey, Jersey Shorthorn and the Brown Swiss breeds with their big wet noses and long awkward little legs.

Speaking of Cows visitors have the chance to enter the annual Dung Throwing Contest. Take careful aim and throw a piece of dried cow dung as far as you can into the ring. If you win you can pick up a few bucks, cash that is.

There’s also the Seed Spitting Contest where visitors can demonstrate their spitting power and skill by sending a Watermelon Seed flying. Don’t worry about being out powered by someone bigger as there are three divisions for men, women and kids. Winners get some cash and a special seed spitting trophy.
