The state of Kentucky, well-known for its horse breeding holds the World Championship Horse Show at its State Fair held in Louisville. Kentucky is big on horses and it shows with the World Championship held along with the Quarter horse Show and the Miniature Horse Show. The kids will probably love to check that one out to get a look at the cute horses!

The first state fair held was in 1816, so in just a few years it will be celebrating its 200th anniversary. There’s lots available for people of all ages, including the kids and seniors. For kids the fair offers the Kaleidoscope Discovery Zone, with lots of fun and interactive exhibits. Each exhibit focuses on teaching the kids a little bit about one of the five areas in the Arts, Writing, Reading, Technology and Careers, along with the new areas of Science and Social Studies, all the while kids will be having so much fun they won’t realize they are learning.

Seniors have their own special area at the fair in the Senior Fun Room, where they can enjoy cooler air, snacks and drinks and maybe get in a game or two of Bingo. This is also a great place to slip off to if your family is getting a little boring.

Competitions at the fair include not only the typical quilt-making, and baking, but best homebrewed beers. You can also check out the unique and exciting event of Pig racing held every year. Make bets with your friends, with your neighbors, which one is the fastest pig?

There will also be a special Pride of the Counties exhibit area set up to showcase something special that each county in Kentucky has to offer the state and its economy. This exhibit will be in the air conditioned area of Main Street Kentucky. An exposition center that will be plumb full of exciting exhibits and if it’s really hot out it will be very popular among visitors. Too bad the horses can’t come in from the heat.

The Washington County Fair takes place every year around August 16-20 in the tiny state of Rhode Island. One of the biggest draws to this fair is its concerts showcasing many of today’s Country Music stars. Plus for the visitors there’s no extra charge, the cost of the concerts are included in the ticket price. Visitors also get to see the tractor and truck pulls free and they can enjoy a nighttime fireworks display courtesy of the fair organizers.

If you are a hobbyist you’ll be interested in the competitive hobbies exhibits. Yes, collectables enthusiasts bring in all the stuff they’ve accumulated over the years and arrange it for a unique and interesting display in their booth. There are divisions in collectable cars, ships, planes and even spaceships. Visitors can swing by their favorite booth and talk shop with a fellow hobbyist for the day.

Another competitive exhibit at the fair is the baking contest. This is unique because contestants are required to bake something from a required recipe each year. It could be Pineapple Bread or Cinnamon Buns, but whoever bakes the best and closest to the recipe is the winner.

Visitors that want to ‘ooh’ and ‘aw’ over cute baby animals should check out the Jr. Animals division of the Junior Dairy Show. You can see heifer calves from the Holstein, Guernsey, Jersey Shorthorn and the Brown Swiss breeds with their big wet noses and long awkward little legs.

Speaking of Cows visitors have the chance to enter the annual Dung Throwing Contest. Take careful aim and throw a piece of dried cow dung as far as you can into the ring. If you win you can pick up a few bucks, cash that is.

There’s also the Seed Spitting Contest where visitors can demonstrate their spitting power and skill by sending a Watermelon Seed flying. Don’t worry about being out powered by someone bigger as there are three divisions for men, women and kids. Winners get some cash and a special seed spitting trophy.

Every year for eight days in the beginning of October the town of Fryeburg, Maine holds a big fair. Visitors come from all around to watch the championships held on the fairs Woodsmen’s Day. You’ll find that the fair is plumb full of loggers, woodsmen and woodswomen.

Field Events for the Woodsmen’s Day championships come in the forms of Women’s and Men’s Bucksaw, Crosscut, Jack and Jill Crosscut, Underhand Chop, the axe throw, the Springboard Chop, Stock Chainsaw, Open Chainsaw and Tree Felling. Last but not least is the event that’s associated with Lumberjacks everywhere, the Log Roll. Crowds laugh it up watching two people attempting to stay balanced on a rolling tree log floating in the water.

As you can probably tell the logging industry is a big part of Maine’s economy and as such the fair organizers work hard to bring in booths that educate visitors on the many products that can be made with wood and some exhibits even give out treats or occasionally baby trees you can plant.

The oldest and still most popular ride at the Fryeburg Fair is the Pony Rides. Kids just love ponies and better yet the chance to ride on one. You may find your kids begging you to buy a pony after taking a few rides on one. Another great place for the kids at the fair is Hayseed Theater. The theater has places to sit for you to get off your feet and for your kids to wind down and plenty of concessions to grab a bite to eat. Entertainment comes in the form of Puppet Shows, Storytellers, Magicians, and Clowns, all of whom will enrapture your kid with delight.

For a more adult atmosphere and a place to relax you can head over to the Gazebo. There are barbershop quartets, stilt walkers, bluegrass bands and even magic tricks. Sit on the grass or bring a light blanket and plan on buying some concession foods for a nice little picnic.
